The President of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank Mujeres Tejedoras II is 27-year-old Maria, who lives in the department-state of Quiche. She has no formal education. This has not stopped her from moving ahead with her traditional textile business weaving beautiful and colorful cortes, which are wraparound skirts worn by Maya women. She has 2 looms and, along with an employee, weaves 40 cortes each month. Her husband is a farmer. The couple works hard to provide basic necessities for their 4 children who range in age from 18 months to 12 years of age. Their eldest 3 attend elementary school.
To fill custom orders from both inside and outside of her community, Maria is requesting her 3rd Kiva loan to buy high-quality thread in various colors at the wholesale level.
Maria calls the monthly meetings to order and the women promptly make loan payments. Then they participate in educational training sessions that give them information relevant to their lives. They obtain business tools like planning, budgeting, investing, and saving. The ladies also learn about health, hygiene, nutrition, medicinal plants, and women's rights and roles. Friendship Bridge calls the combination of loans, education, and healthcare services “Microcredit Plus.”
