The Tucker's started Tucker Family Farm in order to address the problems in conventional food systems. Tyler and Kendra moved to Germany in the fall of 2010 to train with Franz and Ruth at Die Grune Ecke farm. This time in Germany cemented their desire to farm. It was also a crucial learning experience for how animals and food could be raised and prepared. The Tucker's wanted to create something similar for the Montana community: a diverse farm, capable of sustaining itself with very limited external input. Tyler and Kendra, with Tyler's parents, purchased 84 acres in the spring of 2012 to start that dream. After arduous years of converting raw land into an operation farmstead sheep milk creamery, I joined the farm in August of 2015.
I started as a milker, after leaving a much different career path working in global supply chain management. While my work was challenging and exciting, I felt the need to create something with my hands which led me to Tucker Family Farm. I didn't know anything about dairying, but I set my mind to learn as much as I could. While spending time with the sheep is so wonderful, it was learning about the process of turning milk into cheese that really connected with me. My one month stay turned into 3 months and now over 3 years as I have become the Head Cheesemaker and Creamery Manager.
My dream for the future is that we develop into a multi-faceted enterprise that supports our expanding farmstead creamery operation. I want to help grow our community to proliferate local food to more people in Montana. I also dream of developing a cheese that is truly unique and reflective of the Bitterroot Valley to share with the rest of the cheese-loving world.

When lending internationally, the local currency in a borrower's country may lose some of its value compared to the US dollar -- requiring the partner to use more of its local currency to repay Kiva in USD. We offer some Lending Partners the option to protect themselves against currency fluctuations by choosing to pass on these losses to Kiva lenders. By bearing this risk, lenders protect the partner and its borrowers from catastrophic currency devaluations and contribute to the sustainability of their operations.
Potential for currency exchange loss is noted on every loan profile under the loan details:
"Yes" means the Lending Partner will cover any currency loss. Lenders will not bear losses due to currency fluctuation
"Partial" means that the Lending Partner has opted to cover losses only up to 10%. If the U.S. dollar appreciates more than 10% against the local currency, those losses will be passed onto lenders.
"No" means that the Lending Partner is not covering any currency losses and all losses will be passed onto lenders.
"N/A" means the Lending Partner disburses loans to borrowers in USD so their loans are not subject to any currency fluctuation.
