A loan helped to purchase coffee husks, pesticides, fertilizer and to pay for labor.

Harriet's story

Harriet is 24 years old and lives in the town of Kangulumira in the Njeru region of Uganda. She is married and has 2 children with 1 of them currently in school. For the past 5 years, Harriet has been working hard to manage her farming business, which sells pineapples and pepper.

To help expand her business, Harriet has requested a loan of 1,800,000 Ugandan shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to purchase coffee husks, pesticides, fertilizer and to pay for labor, and will help Harriet to generate greater profits. Harriet will use the profits of the business to assist her husband in paying school fees for their children, providing the children with necessities like medical care and clothes, paying house bills and providing basic needs for the family like food thereby improving on their standards of living. Harriet hopes that in the future she will be able to buy a plot of land.

Harriet is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.

This loan is special because:

It offers training programs in life skills for young women.
