Rachel's story

I began my professional life as a therapist; I have a Masters Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Expressive Arts Therapy and I am also licensed as a Massage Therapist. I loved working with small children on the Autism Spectrum, but after challenging years in an underserved public school system, I was burned out and decided that I wanted to do something different and creative, while also finding a way to support myself independently.

I combined my passion for helping individuals to heal, grow, and fulfill their potentials with my lifelong love of making art into a vision of beautiful, comfy clothing. I wanted to create something that would help people feel good in their bodies and confident in their hearts... and so PonyBabe was born. From the very beginning, it has been my mission to create an ethically made, sustainably-minded product. I chose an organic fabric, and partnered with a local fair-wage factory in my home of Brooklyn, NY.

It's been a challenging process; I had no idea how much effort it takes to turn a nice idea into a sustainable small business. But although it's been slow-going, it's also been steady-going. PonyBabe continues to grow, and I am beginning to see the results of all this hard work. I anticipate that 2019 will be a significant year: the year in which my business turns the corner from "will it work?" to "it's really working!”

My greatest wish is to build a business that will allow me to earn a living while doing something that excites me and brings joy to all who experience it. I want to demonstrate that it is possible to run a for-profit small business while maintaining a commitment to ethical practices and low-impact materials.

I feel that everyone involved, from the farmers growing the organic cotton, to the workers sewing the clothing, to the customers choosing to invest their hard-earned money, should experience a benefit from being involved with my brand. I am working intentionally, step by step, to ensure that this vision informs every business decision.

As I continue forward, my hope is that PonyBabe will support me in owning my own home and paying off my student debt. I also look forward to creating meaningful, well-paying jobs for women in my community. I will continue partnering with suppliers who share my vision for lessening the negative impacts of the fashion industry, and I hope to inspire more customers to shop mindfully. We’re all in this together, after all!
