Dea's story

I’m an Indiana Hoosier by birth with deep and painful family roots in the antebellum southern United States. While I have many beautiful childhood memories, I also saw and suffered from the effects of mental illness, generational trauma, violence, and oppression.

As I struggled to make sense of my upbringing and the world as a young adult, I came to know yoga. In these years, yoga increased my connection with God and carried me through struggles as an impoverished young mother, in my relationships, and in my community. Later, yoga sustained me through challenges in my health, college and law school, and my career as a poverty law attorney.

After a decade in the adversarial world of law practice, I found myself at a 200-hour yoga teacher training – passionate and excited about the healing and unity in that space – with no conscious intention of teaching yoga. Yet, before the training ended, I created the vision for Che Yoga and, later, I obtained my Registered Yoga Teacher certification through Yoga Alliance.

Shortly after the training, I moved to Baltimore – a city full of beauty and struggle – and established Che Yoga. At that time, I wasn't sure how I would practice law and build Che Yoga. Then, an unexpected turn of events became an opportunity for my vision for Che Yoga to come to fruition.

Like many people, I initially thought of yoga as an exercise program; as I grew older, I experienced its healing effects on both my mind and body. Now, I know yoga to heal, grow, and strengthen the body, mind, and spirit. Through Che Yoga, I hope to serve as a guide to others on their paths to healing and wellness.
