Keshona's story

I was born in a very rough neighborhood on the westside of Chicago in the late 70’s. It wasn’t ideal, but I learned very quickly how to be innovative. Growing up, I would find different little side jobs to make money. From washing laundry for the other tenants in our building, to upselling No. 2 pencils to the boys at school when theirs would break. I even learned to braid hair, and would do that often in my spare time as well. I became a mother very young, and entered Corporate America at the age of 15. My first job was a Personal Secretary to a Civil Rights Attorney, Downtown Chicago. I was so proud of myself. She taught me so much about life, and how to work hard for what I wanted. I tested out of high school early, and started college at 16. I majored in Business, and minored in Psychology. After finishing 2 semesters of school, I returned home. With no direction, I went back to Corporate America. This time working for some major Fortune 500 companies. It paid the bills, but it definitely wasn’t fulfilling. I wanted something different. After giving birth to my premature daughter in 2001, I decided to switch careers. I went back to school and became a Paramedic. 10 years later I was burned out. I returned to school yet again, this time for business. Finally, I had arrived at my happy place! I graduated in 2012 and never looked back. Now, as a single mom of 2, I’ve started my own business, and I’m so grateful for the chance to live out my lifelong dreams. My goal is to make ‘SquitoGear a household name, and build a profitable, socially responsible company that I can leave to my children and grandchildren.
