Eight Maya K’iche ladies, who want to combat the effects of poverty and educate their children, have joined together and formed the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Maravillas de Concepcion” in the Department/State of Quiche. They are beginning their 1st KIVA loan cycle and will use the funds to invest in their businesses that include the sales of clothing, vegetables, fruits, bakery goods, regional snacks, as well as raising chickens and pigs.
Mercedes, a married mother of 2 children (3,6), is a member of the group who is proud that her oldest child attends kindergarten. Her goal is to give her children a complete education because she realizes that education is essential to their success.
Mercedes raises poultry and is requesting a KIVA loan to buy chickens, ducks and also pigs at the wholesale level. She anticipates additional income from adding pigs to her yard.
The women meet monthly to make loan payments and then participate in educational trainings, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, education and healthcare services. They are eager to acquire information about effective business practices, health, nutrition, hygiene, the use of medicinal plants and how to prioritize their expenses. They also learn about empowerment and gain self esteem!
Thank you, KIVA investors, for your kindness in funding these loans!
