Fatu (first on left), the featured borrower of Fatu's Female Farmers, is a 55-year-old mother of seven from Makumbu Village. As a strong leader in the community, she regularly organizes women's activities and helps young female farmers.
Fatu is a seasoned farmer who lost her business during the Ebola crisis, as well as several extended family members. She refuses to give up, despite losing a lifetime of work. She has organized a large group of other women who similarly had prospered before the crisis, then lost everything, but now will not give up.
All members are currently trapped in a cycle of subsistence and take extremely high-interest loans for poor quality inputs during planting time. A no-interest Kiva loan will therefore enable this group of determined women to get back on their feet and back in business.
