Jamila's story

I was born in Oakland to a Trinidadian immigrant and an American of Trinidadian descent. I still live in Oakland today with my husband, 3 kids - ages 12, 3, and 1 - and two dogs.

I have worked with my father in his business since I was 10 years old. I can remember the smell of curry and the sound of my father’s marble rolling pin hitting the butcher block in a soft rhythm while he made roti. I grew up working for my dad in the Kitchen and have come to understand the inner workings of the business from start to finish.

This year we decided to begin the process of transitioning the family business from my dad to me. We have spent the last few months fine tuning our business plan, looking for a brick & mortar location, and developing our new vision. Now that we have our new space and are ready to expand to new markets, I am looking forward to successfully growing Daniel’s Caribbean Kitchen and continuing my father's legacy.

This loan is special because:
