A loan helped to purchase a biodigester to turn her farm waste into renewable resources.

Alice's story

Alice is a farmer who lives in Imenti South, Kenya. She plans to use a Sistema.bio digester to eliminate wood, fossil fuels and chemical fertilizers from her farm. Moreover, she lives with her six family members including three children who she supports with income from her 10 cows and from her annual corn yield.

She wastes a lot of time chopping wood meant for cooking and heating bathwater, and also worries about the piled up waste on her farm which requires improvement. With the Sistema.bio digester, she will transform her cows’ manure into renewable energy (biogas) and nutrient-rich organic fertilizer (biol). This will be beneficial for cooking and increasing the yield of her corn field. As a result, she will eliminate the need to chop wood, and use the money she used to spend on fossil fuels and chemical fertilizer to invest in buying additional cows.

With this Kiva loan, Alice will realize her dream of making her farm economically and environmentally sustainable.

This loan represents 67% of the price of the biodigester; the remaining part is paid directly by Alice.

This loan is special because:

It saves farmers money by transforming waste into biogas and organic fertilizer.
