A loan helped to buy new fishing nets and a new vehicle for transportation for her business.

'Akanesi's story

'Akanesi is a 43-year-old married woman with six children and two grandchildren. She's running two businesses: fishing and tapa making. 'Akanesi is concentrating on working in tapa making while her husband helps with the fishing, so 'Akanesi only takes part in marketing the fish or their fishing business. She sells different types of fish from the catches. She said that one of the challenges of their business is the weather; sometimes their fishing business is paused for almost two weeks due to the bad weather because her husband cannot go fishing.

One of her daughters helps 'Akanesi with tapa making. When it's finished, they sell it out in the market to help earn money to repay their loan and also to help them with living expenses.

Last February, a very strong cyclone named Gita visited Tonga and affected most of the Tongan people's lives, including 'Akanesi's. Her house was destroyed by the cyclone. She's still confidently focusing on her business to continue earning more income for her family in order to achieve her dreams to improve their business and for a better future for her little family.

She hopes to get a vehicle for easier transportation for the business.
