The Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Las Manzanas Xepol” is what nine hardworking ladies, who live in the department/state of Quiche, have called their group. They meet monthly to make loan payments and to participate in educational trainings, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, education, and healthcare services. They are requesting their fourth Kiva loan because they want to invest in their traditional textile businesses.
Sebastiana, a 41-year-old mother of six children, all over the age of six, is pleased that her youngest children attend school and are enrolled in the third and fourth grades. She has a traditional textile business and makes colorful blouses called “huipiles” that she sells in the local market.
Sebastiana is requesting a Kiva loan to buy a variety of colorful, high quality thread (German, etc). She wants to have plenty of supplies available to meet the requests of her customers. This is especially important at the end of the year with holidays and graduations.
The monthly educational trainings are a major key for success for these women. Because they have little or no formal education, it is vital that they learn about effective business practices, nutrition, health, and hygiene. They also learn about reproductive health, skincare, and women’s rights. Often they share what they learn with family members and friends.
