The 9 ladies in the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Flor de Chuacorral” Group live in the mountains in the department/state of Totonicapan. Their simple adobe homes have dirt floors and sheet-metal roofs. o support the household and educational expenses of their children, they have convenience stores and traditional textile businesses. They sell their colorful textiles both inside and outside their community. To leave their community, they need to travel in the back of a pick-up truck for one hour on a bumpy dirt road. The women are beginning their second loan cycle with Kiva and want to restock their businesses.
Hilda, who is 23 years old, is the youngest member of the group and has a 7th grade education. She is married and waiting to start a family. Her goal is for her business to become more firmly established so that she has sufficient funds to support the family. Along with her husband, Hilda embroiders woven wrap around tube skirts called “cortes.” She is requesting a loan to buy thread in a variety of colors and embroidery patterns.
The “Microcredit Plus” program of Friendship Bridge (loans, education, healthcare) is essential to the success of these ladies. Each month, they participate in educational trainings where they learn about effective business practices, health, hygiene, nutrition and how to prioritize expenses. They also learn about empowerment, self-esteem and women’s rights.
