David's story

Raised in Harlem. I became bi-coastal at the age of nine as my parents divorced and my mother moved to Los Angeles. One of my dad’s interest was music, and he would take me to watch his friends perform at Jazz and Blues Clubs around Boston and New York. My Dad saw the passion in my eyes when I would watch the drummers, and at eight years old he bought me my first drum set. Drums became my life, and it led me to become a professional percussionist working with folks like Horace Tapscott, Billy Higgins in the Jazz world and Barry White, Eartha Kit, Gregory Hines and many others in the commercial entertainment industry. When I was living with my mother, I was surrounded by a wide variety of health enthusiast, from bodybuilders to vegetarians/vegans finding myself often on muscle beach in Venice California, meeting Arnold Schwarzenegger, Robbie Robertson to Frank Zane who was my math teacher in Venice High School. This environment became an excellent source of physical and nutritional education for me, which I was not exposed to coming from the inner city. I decided at the age of twelve to lean towards removing red meat and became a basic vegetarian as I saw my dad struggle with diabetes and high blood pressure. My mother acquired Alzheimer in my early twenty's. At this point, I decided to do what I could to avoid the health issues that my parents suffered from by becoming entirely vegan to prevent these issues in my life. The change in eating did wonders for me, but there weren’t a lot of options, let alone tasty ones. So I decided to start preparing my meals, and that is how Healthy City Food began.
