“Las Estrellitas” or “The Stars” is the name that nine Maya K’iche ladies have given to their Friendship Bridge Trust Bank in the department/state of Totonicapan. The women aspire to be stars and successfully shine for their families, communities and to themselves.
They have traditional textile businesses and weave / embroider magnificent colorful blouses or “huipiles”. A few of them sell accessories for cell phones. This is their 1st KIVA loan cycle and the ladies are looking forward to making progress with their businesses and increasing income. This is necessary as their husbands do not bring home enough to support their families.
Ema, a 24-year-old mother of a 7-month-old daughter, is a member of the group with a 6th grade education. She is already saving funds toward the future education of her daughter. Ema has a traditional textile business and embroiders beautiful traditional blouses. She would like to offer her customers the latest designs and increase her income. Ema is requesting a Kiva loan to buy various fabrics and high quality thread in various colors.
Ema and the ladies meet monthly to make loan payments and participate in educational trainings, designed by a Facilitator from the organization. Information about business, health, family and women is presented using games, role playing, pictures and diagrams. The ladies are eager to learn and often share the information with family and friends.
Thank you, Kiva investors!
