A loan helped to purchase farming inputs such as fertilizers and hybrid seeds to improve the quality of her produce, earn more profits, and elevate her living standards.

Doreen's story

Taking a close look at the above picture, you will see Doreen and her lovely son in the background. Looking at her, one might not realize the kind of hardship she has gone though over the past years of faming. Despite all the adversities, she has always emerged victorious. Doreen lives in the Nkubu area of Kenya. She is blessed with lovely children who are her greatest motivation. She perseveres because she wants to provide a better future for them. Her primary income sources are crops and animals products. The quality of Doreen’s crops has dwindled due to the use of poor farm inputs. This has brought about low demand for her crops and has negatively impacted her sales.

Access to modern-quality farm inputs (fertilizers and hybrid seeds) is the pillar of agricultural revolution. However in Kenya, a developing country, fertilizers and seed allocation by the government is way below the needs of farmers. Doreen is seeking a helping hand to purchase farming inputs such as fertilizers and hybrid seeds to boost the quality of her produce.

Since Juhudi Kilimo, which is in partnership with Kiva, ventured into the affairs of smallholder farmers in Kenya, farmers can attest that there has been a significant improvement in the availability of inputs. Doreen is assured of a bumper harvest, which will open new markets for her crops and, subsequently, increase her profits. This will elevate her standard of living, as well as that of her beautiful children.

This loan is special because:

It finances smallholder farmers to purchase dairy cows, chickens, cereals and farming equipment.
