A loan helped a member to buy building supplies and construct a new greenhouse, to grow vegetable seedlings for sale.

El Rosario Sacatepequez Group's story

The Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “El Rosario Sacatepequez” has 8 Maya Kaqchikel members who live in a rural area of the department of Sacatepequez in Guatemala. They proudly wear the area's traditional Maya outfit of embroidered blouse (huipil), skirt (corte), and woven belt (faja). Three of the members have a 3rd-grade education. All are looking forward to receiving their 1st KIVA loan to invest into their businesses selling snacks, corn seeds, beans, radishes, and traditional Maya clothing.

Juana is a member who is 33 years old and has 6 children (3-11). Since she has no formal education, Juana hopes for a complete education for her children (5 attend school from kindergarten to 4th grade), so that they will have more prosperous futures. In order to provide the income for their education, Juana has 2 businesses---a vegetable farm and preparing delicious foods for sale in the afternoon. She is requesting a Kiva loan to build a greenhouse in which to grow vegetable seedlings. She plans to buy wood, nylon, and fertilizer in bulk.

As Friendship Bridge clients, Juana and her friends participate in the "Microcredit Plus" program of loans, education, and healthcare. They benefit enormously from the sessions where they learn good business-management skills, or learn to develop good health habits by eating nutritious foods, or learn to develop self-esteem. They also have health clinics for regular check-ups and family planning.

Thank you KIVA!
