A loan helped to purchase a biodigester to power her farm and stop cutting down trees.

Juana Irene's story

Juana Irene lives in Acatlan. Like many farmers in her region, she used to buy firewood to power her farm, but this method has become a problem. Now, trees are scarce, making it even more difficult for farmers to have affordable access to energy. Juana Irene plans to use a Sistema Biobolsa biodigester to eliminate wood, fossil fuels, and chemical fertilizers from her farm.

With her 12-cubic-meter biodigester, she will transform manure from her sheep, pigs, and goats into renewable energy and organic fertilizer. In addition, she and her family will be able to cook without smoke and stop spending time chopping wood. Juana Irene’s family will also increase their corn and bean productivity with the organic fertilizer that the biodigester will produce and give back to the soil the nutrients needed to reforest Acatlan.

This loan represents 63% of the full price of the biodigester; the remaining part was covered by a cash down payment and a government subsidy.

This loan is special because:

It saves farmers money by transforming waste into biogas and organic fertilizer.
