A loan helped a member to buy wholesale corn, two “comales” to heat her delicious tortillas on, as well as firewood.

Estrellas De Alotenango Group's story

The secretary of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank group “Estrellas de Alotenango” is Hortensia, the mother of three children who range in age from 3-10. Although she only has a sixth grade education, Hortensia has worked hard so that two of her children can go to school.

One year ago, she opened up a small tortilla business. Her sales have increased and she is requesting a KIVA loan to buy corn at the wholesale level, two “comales” to heat her delicious tortillas on, as well as firewood.

Hortensia is pleased because her previous loan helped her to increase earnings and cover the basic needs of her children.

Hortensia and her group of seven friends who live in the department/state of Sacatepequez are requesting their first KIVA loan. They are seamstresses and have commercial businesses selling fruit, flowers, food and firewood. They are motivated to control their future, educate their children and sustain and improve their households.

The ladies participate in monthly educational trainings, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, education and healthcare services. Hortensia shares, “The topics that I remember best have to do with skin care and vaccinations. That is why I have made it a priority that my youngest son have his vaccinations.” Other topics include nutrition, hygiene and the use of medicinal plants, as well as essential business tools.

The women send their gratitude to KIVA investors for funding their essential loans. Thank you!
