A loan helped to buy materials for bags and basket making.

Halima's story

Halima is 23 years old and lives in the town of Ishaka in the Kabwohe region of Uganda. She is married and has one child. For the past 3 years, Halima has been working hard to manage her weaving business, which sells and weaves bags and baskets.

To help expand her business, Halima has requested a loan of 1,300,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy materials for bags and basket making, and will help Halima to generate greater profits. From this, she expects her business will expand and Halima will be able to meet the basic necessities at home and pay for her child's school fees thereby improving their standards of living. Halima hopes that in the future she will be able to open up a crafts factory.

Halima is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.
