Mujeres Poroma Group's story

Laureana and 8 friends live in a rural area in the department/state of Chimaltenango. Their homes are made of cement block houses with corrugated sheet roofing. Their children play in small patios with lots of colorful flowers and plants. The ladies have electricity and running water. Their small businesses include the sales of plastic containers, traditional snacks, tortillas, traditional textiles. Their income supports their household needs.

The Maya Kaqchikel women have joined together to form the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Mujeres Poroma”. They meet monthly to make loan payments. This is their 2nd KIVA loan cycle. The women participate in educational training, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, educational training and healthcare services. Topics are relevant to their lives and include business, family, health and women.

Laureana, a 65 year old married mother of 7 children (24-48) is a member of the group. She is proud that all her children went to school. She weaves/sells colorful traditional clothing. Laureana is requesting a Kiva loan to buy thread in many colors and fabric so that she can offer her customers the very latest and most attractive styles.

Laureana shares her opinion about the monthly educational training: “In the last session, the theme was caring for ourselves when we are pregnant. With my experience, I shared more advice with my friends about caring for our health during this chapter of our lives.”

Thank you, Kiva investors!
