The nearly 28,000 underserved Guatemalan ladies who participate in the Friendship Bridge “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, educational training and healthcare services, are appreciative of the support. Since they have little or no formal education, their monthly training about business, health, family and women, is a way for them to become more informed. A facilitator from the organization shares information with them using pictures, diagrams, role playing and games.
The Trust Bank “Imelda” was formed by 7 Maya K’iche ladies who live in a rural area in the department/state of Quiche. They are requesting their 1st KIVA loan and will invest the funds into their traditional textile and recycling businesses.
Juana, a member of the group, is 46 years old and has 3 children (16-30). She has worked hard to give each of her children a good education. She was only able to send them through the 6th grade. Juana dreams of improving her house and adding a second story. Thanks to her businesses fabricating and selling colorful traditional beaded belts called “fajas” and beautiful blouses called “huipiles”, she is partially achieving her goal. She is requesting a KIVA loan to buy 5 pounds of colorful beads and various spools of thread.
