Flor Cauquense Group's story

Flor Cauquense Group is one of the Trust Banks in the state of Sacatepéquez in Guatemala. In a rural areas outside of the urban center, the eight women of the Trust Bank meet each month to manage their business loans and repayments. These women proudly wear their traditional Maya dress. They run small farms and weaving businesses where they create authentic fabrics–a cultural tradition that is often passed down through generations of Mayan weavers.

Marta is 50 years old and has seven children, all of whom went to school through 11th Grade. She has nine grandchildren who attend school. She received three years of formal education, like the others in the Trust Bank. Participating in the Trust Bank has helped Marta provide these opportunities for the different generations in her family.

“I like being part of the Trust Bank because in addition to accessing credit, I get lessons on how to invest and save the money, which has helped me grow my business,” Marta stated. “My earnings have helped me support my grandchildren’s education.”

Marta grows corn, beans, lettuce, parsley, cilantro, and green beans. She requested her first loan from Friendship Bridge, which she will use to buy a variety of seeds and fertilizer to ensure a healthy harvest.
