This is the 3rd loan cycle for the 7 Maya Kaqchikel ladies in the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Flor del Lago Santa Catarina”. They travel in the back of a pickup for 45 minutes to their monthly meetings. The women live in a small community, in cement block homes. There is an average of 5 members in each of their families. It is customary for them to share their daily meals around a fire. Most of them have traditional handicraft & textile businesses. Their monthly meetings are essential to their success. They make payments on their loans & participate in educational sessions, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, education & healthcare services. Because the ladies have little or no formal education, they are eager to learn about effective business practices, healthy & nutritious habits & how to empower themselves.
The Treasurer of the Trust Bank is 25 year old Gloria who is single with a 6th grade education. She likes to help her family with expenses & makes beautiful colorful traditional blouses called “huipiles” with the unique designs of her community. She needs to increase production. Gloria is requesting a loan to buy 4 pounds of high quality thread in various colors.
Speaking on behalf of the women, Gloria shares, “We appreciate what we learn in our monthly training from a facilitator who speaks our Maya language. We like playing games that enable us to understand what we are learning about.”
Thank you, KIVA investors, for believing in these women!
