The magnificent Lake Atitlan is known throughout the world for its beauty and the colorfully dressed Maya people who live here. A Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “El Esfuerzo San Lucas” is located here, formed by a group of Maya Kaqchikel ladies, who are beginning their first loan cycle with Kiva. They sell their tomatoes and other vegetables, traditional handicrafts and textiles, and chicken by the pound in their busy local market.
Sandra, a 33-year-old mother of four children (aged 2-14) is a member of the group, who is highly motivated to meet the needs of her children. Her oldest son is in the seventh grade while the two youngest ones are not yet in school. Sandra’s second son has learning challenges, and one of her goals is for him to have a successful educational experience. She takes orders for elegant traditional colorful blouses called “huipiles”. Because of high demand, she employs 10 women in the business who, in turn, are able to create income for their own families. Sandra is requesting a loan to buy 10 pounds of thread because she wants to have plenty available during this busy time!
The “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, education, and healthcare services is of vital importance to these women. At their monthly meetings, they learn to manage their loans, care for their families and empower themselves. In supplying capital for the loans, Kiva investors fill an important role. Thank you!
