A loan helped invest in raw materials so she can secure consistent weaving work and increase her income potential.

Hli's story

Hli was born and raised in Kunsaatan Village, about one hour north of Huay Hom Village (where she lives now). She grew up in a traditional Hmong hill tribe family and spent her childhood working in difficult field labor instead of going to school. She has always been frustrated by her lack of education.

Hli married a man from the San-wang clan and lived for many years as a traditional Hmong wife, working in the fields and caring for her family. She had ambitions beyond her limited domestic role and always dreamed of being able to provide more than the bare necessities to her children. When she learned about the opportunity to weave hammocks, she was excited about the chance to learn a new skill and earn her own income.

Now Hli has been weaving for several years and her family is very proud of her achievements. With this loan, she will transition into a role as a main breadwinner for her family. She will also be able to manage their household finances better through the financial training program. She is very grateful to the Kiva community for helping her achieve her dream of financial empowerment.

This loan is special because:

It creates employment opportunities for vulnerable populations living in remote rural areas.
