Halimah's story

I was born in California, however, due to my dads busy schedule at work and my parents martial problems my dad was forced to send me to Nigeria to live with his sister at the age of 7 years old. Growing up without my parents caused me a lot of heartache and pain. On the other hand, the culture and traditions were interesting and different. Being able to dress up in traditional clothing was my favorite part along with the tasty rich food I grew accustomed to. Growing up in Africa and losing my father inspired me to start my business.

I remember when I was 16 old, I had the desire to make hankies for the church ladies to purchase. So I named my business Heavenly Hankies. I expressed to my mom, how going in business for myself was important to me and she bought a used sewing machine. I self taught myself, how to sew and began making hankies for the church mothers at a reasonable price. That was the beginning of my entrepreneurial journey.

Today, I am grateful for the progress, I have made with my new business, and Nubian Chic Designs in two short years. Growing up in Africa and losing my father inspired me to start my business.

Although, I have faced many obstacles in all areas of my life, I continue to strive for excellence. My dream is to buy a fashion truck and to one day open up day programs for people with disabilities in Nigeria.
