Nikema's story

I have from a young age been willing to stand out and do things differently. I decided as a teen to pursue a professional dance career. The bulk of my dance training came from the visual and performing arts programs at the public schools I attended. I benefitted first-hand from a nearly cost-free education in the arts. I was able to gain enough skill as a dancer to be accepted into a post-secondary training program at The Ailey School in New York City.

Today, I am a mother of two children. My children attended the same school for Kindergarten that I did as a child. When my oldest reached 2nd grade we decided to leave the neighborhood school to homeschool. Leaving the traditional school system has been an amazing journey. I feel like I have freed my children and given them space to fully express themselves and develop as individuals.

I chose to homeschool because it was the better choice over the schools available to us. I don't believe that homeschooling is the ideal way of educating my children. I started looking for alternative schools and communities that could provide the type of education I'd like my children to experience. There is nothing in Sacramento like what I am envisioning with PopSchools. I have decided to be the change I wish to see.

There is something magical about the community that is formed when you have a group of people with common goals and interests. That is what is lacking from the homeschooling experience. My best memories of school were when I was in my dance and art classes. I am most excited about growing a community of young artists. I can't wait to see what they create once they're given the time and space to do so.
