A loan helped to buy a sewing machine.

Babra's story

Babra is 22 years old and lives in the town of Pallisa in the Iganga region of Uganda. She is single and has one child. For the past 2 years, Babra has been working hard to manage her tailoring business, which sells bitenge (African fabrics) and other clothes.

To help expand her business, Babra has requested a loan of 600,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy a sewing machine, and will help Babra to generate greater profits. It will help the business to expand and Babra will be in position to provide for more basic needs for her family and also improve the standards of living. Babra hopes that in the future she will be able to open a supermarket.

Babra is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.

This loan is special because:

It offers training programs in life skills for young women.
