Georgette is a married woman and mother of nine children; the eldest is 40 and the youngest 14 years old. Two of the children are enrolled in school.
Georgette grows bananas and belongs to a GIE (Economic Interest Group) whose goal is to support mutual aid among the region's farmers, facilitate marketing, and mutually guarantee one another. All the members are vouched for by the President of the GIE.
Georgette grows her organic bananas on an area of 100 square meter, and she has an annual yield of seven tons of bananas. She is well-versed in her activity but has challenges such as the cost of very expensive, good quality agricultural inputs, a better system of irrigation, and late financing.
With the loan amount, Georgette intends to buy 10 tons of good quality fertilizer and 600 bundles of straw. This will allow her to boost her yield and the quality of her production.
With her profits, Georgette is going to ensure school fees for her children, cover her own needs, and finish off and furnish her house. She also intends to buy some livestock to diversify her activity and expand her income to do small-scale retailing. With the income from the retailing, she will be able to pay for higher education for her children.
