A loan helped to buy maize that he will sell at the local market to help local farmers.

Elicha's story

Elicha is 41 years old and has 18 years of experience in the sale of maize, sesame, beans and agricultural equipment at the market. He lives in Sussundenga with his wife and 12 children.

Losing his father at a very early age led Elicha to begin selling crops and equipment. To help his family, he had to abandon his studies and start selling cooking oil and corn, and later opened a stall for the sale of various other products.

He feels that his business motivates him to continue and expand because it helps him provide for his family. His future plans include obtaining land for his own production of horticulture and construction of a warehouse to keep his crops. He also hopes to one day be able to purchase a vehicle for the transportation of crops from the farms to the market.

This Kiva loan will be used to provide farmers with needed goods or services in-kind, and agro dealers with access to financial credit to support their crop aggregation businesses. These loans would also enable the purchase of inputs by agro dealers which they can sell further down the supply chain.

This loan is special because:

It allows farmers access to new markets and agricultural resources.
