Ursa's story

Dog training took me by surprise. Growing up on a farm, it was no surprise that I loved animals, but I never dreamed I could make a viable career out of that. When I adopted my first puppy as an adult and took him to training classes, the instructor asked if I wanted to apprentice with her. I jumped at the chance, and that was my introduction into the world of training and behavior.

I spent eight years in shelter behavior making really tough decisions about the animals in our care. Seeing dogs surrendered for behavior issues, and the pain and anguish this caused their owners, made an impression on me. I realized that the lack of understanding of dog behavior, and how to change it, was not only responsible for the untimely deaths of many beloved family pets, but also the heartbreak of the people who loved them. I worked hard to educate myself, saving money to go to behavior conferences, buy textbooks, and attend workshops with well-known behaviorists in order to be better equipped to help solve these problems.

Over the years, I've found my passion not just for helping animals, but people. I enjoy teaching and connecting with clients over a shared love of their pets. Working with people in this capacity shows me the vulnerability, compassion, and dedication that the human-animal bond facilitates, and I truly believe it is one of the best things about our world. As a relatively new mother, I also see my son developing a bond with our own dogs, and how that enhances his life. Above everything, I want to help create more of that bond, and improve the quality of life for both people and their pets.
