A loan helped to pay for greenhouses for better production of vegetables all year round.

Margarida's story

Margarida is an honest and hardworking 53-year-old divorcee that lives in Maputo along with her 2 younger children. She tried all sorts of different activities and felt that agriculture is where her true calling is and it is where she has been for the past 17 years.

She would like to improve the conditions of her field, so that she gains more from her production. Her dream is to build a house of her own and these funds will give her that chance.

The funds will be used to purchase 6 fully equipped tropicalized greenhouses which will enable Margarida to produce good quality vegetables throughout the year. Due to very hot temperatures and heavy rainfall, Margarida is unable to produce vegetables during the months of October-April. The greenhouses will open up great business opportunities since the supply of vegetables in Maputo is very low during these months. The equipment includes a drip irrigation system which she will take advantage of to grow tomatoes, cabbage, and cucumbers in a controlled environment.

Margarida is enrolled in a local program which supports a portion of the investment in equipment. She is searching for financing of approximately the final 15% of the greenhouses cost in order to leverage the available support.

This loan is special because:

It gives smallholder farmers access to productive equipment and new markets.
