A loan helped to buy farming supplies to start sowing carrots and so ensure a good harvest and better income.

Paulina's story

Paulina is 63 years old, she was a single mother and her business is the production of carrots. She carries out her work in the Mizque rural zone, 180 kilometres distance from the city on a paved road. Paulina lives alone in her own home. She has almost 6 hectares of land that she inherited from her predecessors and where she grows 2 hectares of carrots, onions and tomatoes. The rest of the lands are not worked due to lack of help.

To ensure a good production she has an irrigation system through channels and she receives water from the community reservoir. The farming cycle lasts for 6 months. This means that she sows and harvests twice a year. To ensure the next production she must start the job of turning, fertilising and fumigating the land before starting the harvest.

The advantage is that she harvests several times per year, the problem is covering the initial costs. Her dream is to have machinery that would lessen her workload. She hopes to start the jobs to ensure the following harvest. Her dream is to obtain the maximum profit from each productive cycle, she hopes to start sowing carrots.

With this loan, she will buy fertiliser, insecticide and carrot seeds as well as paying labour costs. This is the fifth loan that she will receive from the institution in the 45 years that she has dedicated to this work.

It is for these reasons that Paulina is asking for a loan to buy farming supplies to start sowing carrots and so ensure a good harvest and better income.
