A loan helped a member to purchase fertilizers and mushroom seed.

Matera Group's story

Tangisai aged 57 started a horticulture business in 2008. Despite perennial droughts, she managed to sustain and earn a living from the business. To be successful, Tangisai always finds herself surrounded by other farmers. One of the local farmers helped her with a cabbage production manual in 2008 since she was new to the project. This was an eye-opener for Tangisai who is now spending most of her time in her small plot spraying, weeding, and watering her ever-green vegetable garden. During her many farm visits, Tangisai has since started to learn about the diversity in horticulture and now has started growing Tsunga, an indigenous vegetable variety which is resistant to both diseases and pests. Tangisai, a widow, believes in her hands for survival since the death of her husband 10 years ago. Her four children have never been chased from school due to unpaid fees, neither they have slept on an empty stomach.c After training, Tangisai will use her portion of $300 to purchase fertilizers and mushroom seed.
