A loan helped a member to maintain restored native pine forest that will produce resin to harvest.

Patamban Group's story

Elías is 48 years old, a leader of a group of 4 people in the indigenous community of Patamban in Michoacán, México. His grandfather and father were resin producers and, since childhood, Elías has also worked in resin. In search of better opportunities, he had to emigrate to the U.S. and dedicate himself to construction to get his family ahead. After the passage of years and yearning for the affection of his parents, he decided to return to his hometown. Upon his return, he didn't find the trees that he remembered so much. So Elías planted some resin pines with the support of Kiva in 2014.

His intentions are to generate income from the harvest of resin from the planted pines. The dream of producing resin is closer every time and begins when the trees are 10 years old and keep giving resin and income for the next 70 years and contributes to the conservation of forests. He is looking for his parents being able to return to see their land with trees as it was when he was young. His greatest goal now is to bring the plantation successfully to harvest for which he needs a loan to invest in the maintenance of his resin orchards to perform pest and disease control work, pruning and thinning.

Elías, Elvia, Elvira and Lucila are enthusiastic and are thankful for the support to get their families ahead with the noble job of resin production which affirms their ancestral Purepechas cultural practices
