Terry's story

As one member of a worker-owned cooperative, my story is only one of eight. I am married and the father of three. I grew up in Broken Arrow, a suburb of Tulsa, Oklahoma. I grew up in a blue-collar union family that instilled in me the value of labor. In college I developed a more robust understanding of social justice which propelled me to learn about ways to do community development. While enrolled in the Community Development track of a Master's program, I learned about cooperative development as an additional method for helping communities build a just and sustainable economy. During this time I became convinced that worker cooperatives were a much needed strategy for changing society.

At the same time I was learning about cooperatives, I was also involved in the founding of CommonWealth Urban Farms, a nonprofit urban farm in Oklahoma City. We based our operation on compost as a way to grow nutritious food in urban soils. Before we started growing anything, for one whole year we composted expired food waste from a nearby grocery store on a vacant lot near the farm. Seeing how much food waste was generated by just one grocery store encouraged me to consider starting a business to help other businesses and individuals divert their food waste from the landfill.

Having decided to begin and operate as a bootstrapped business, myself and the other members of our cooperative have all worked other full- and part-time jobs. We are hoping that through this loan several of us will be able to transition to full-time employment with the cooperative in the near future. With the support of our local community and the KIVA community, our goals of environmental sustainability and social justice are on the way to becoming realized.
