Quiché is one of 22 departments/states in Guatemala and the home of eight Maya K’iche ladies who live in a rural area and call their Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “La Fe” or “The Faith”. They are very excited to begin their first loan with Kiva.
Candelaria, a 22-year-old married mother of two children (5 and 9 years old), is a member of the group. She finished the eighth grade and has worked hard so that her nine-year-old can go to the second grade. Along with the other women in the group, Candelaria weaves traditional textiles like colorful blouses or “huipiles”, shawls or “perrajes” and carrying cloths or “manteles” that are sold in nearby markets. She needs a loan to buy lots of different colors of thread at the wholesale level. Without a doubt, this will help her to increase production, sales and income.
The Mission of Friendship Bridge is to create opportunities that empower Guatemalan women to create a better life. The ladies in “La Fe” Trust Bank, besides getting their much appreciated loans, participate in educational trainings, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans and education. These monthly educational sessions are tremendously empowering for them as they gain useful business tools, learn to support their families better and become empowered women who have self esteem.
Thank you, Kiva lenders, for being a part of this exciting work. These women’s lives are truly being transformed!
