Zacarias's story

Zacarias (62) started his business 40 years ago in a village in Manica province. He runs a shop which sells groceries and agriculture inputs as well as a warehouse he uses to store crops that he aggregates such as maize, sesame, soya, pigeon pea and sugar beans form surrounding farmers.

His resilience and dedication to this business has earned lucrative markets in Maputo and Beira. He buys at very competitive prices since he does not incur any transport costs to collect and sell the product. His aggregation business helps hundreds of poor rural families in the surrounding districts.

Zacarias’ biggest limitation is a lack of capital to absorb all the product from the small farmers. Soon after the commercialization of the crops, he has to order large volumes of fertilizers, seed and chemicals to ensure that the farmers have improved inputs. He is the only agro dealer in the whole district. Zacarias dreams of opening his village’s first hypermarket.

This Kiva loan will be used to provide farmers with needed goods or services in-kind, and agro dealers with access to financial credit to support their crop aggregation businesses. These loans would also enable the purchase of inputs by agro dealers which they can sell further down the supply chain.

This loan is special because:

It allows farmers access to new markets and agricultural resources.
