The famous kite festival is held on the Day of the Dead or November 1st in a rural community in the state of Sacatepéquez. Giant kites with intricate designs are flown as a means of communicating with the dead & showing them where to return to visit their family members. The Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Flor de San Jose Yalu” was formed here by 13 women who have an average age of 38 years. They are beginning their 1st loan cycle with Kiva & want to invest in their agricultural businesses. This is their 1st loan cycle with Kiva.
The Treasurer of the Trust Bank is Ana, a 38 year old married woman with 4 children (3-13). She has a 2nd grade education as that is all her parents could afford. Ana, her husband & family are farmers & grow squash & peas. Ana is requesting a loan to buy fertilizer & seeds for the farm. She is excited to be getting a loan as it will bring hope to her family along with essential income.
The ladies meet monthly to make payments on their loans & participate in educational trainings, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program of Friendship Bridge. The curriculum is responsive to the needs of the women & covers an aspect of business, family, health & women. There are advanced training opportunities for women who seek to expand their possibilities.
