Flor De Mayo Group's story

Friendship Bridge is grateful that KIVA investors partner with the organization to ensure that women in Guatemala have the opportunity to improve their economic situation & become more empowered. The support of KIVA investors truly transforms the lives of these women.

Debora is one of these ladies. She is a single 28 year old woman & belongs to the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Flor de Mayo” in Quetzaltenango. She participates in the monthly educational training, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans & education. The lessons are given by a Facilitator who speaks in their “Maya K’iche” language & uses role playing, pictures, diagrams to share information about health, family, women & business.

All of the ladies have traditional textile businesses. Debora embroiders beautiful traditional blouses or “huipiles” & is determined that the tradition of wearing these textile treasures continues. She is well known as a talented artisan in her community & her textiles enjoy high demand. Debora is requesting a loan to buy fabric, thread, & embellishments like pearls for embroidering their “huipiles”.

In spite of the fact that these women have a primary or secondary education, they are determined & motivated to work hard toward a brighter & more prosperous future. This is their 2nd loan cycle with KIVA & they look forward to taking steps ahead. Thank you, KIVA investors, for the important role you play in their lives!
