Maureen's story

Aged 45 years, Maureen is an emerging small-scale business lady and farmer in Petauke district in the Eastern Province of Zambia. Maureen is asking for a loan to enable her obtain a solar water pump to improve the irrigation system at her farm.

Maureen grows a variety of crops on her farm which includes soya beans, maize, tomatoes, carrots and green vegetables like rape and Chinese cabbage. She sells these crops at markets within the surrounding area of her farm where they can fetch good prices from traders who travel to the area from larger and further towns.

Like Maureen, many rural farmers in the district use buckets or manual pumps to draw water from shallow wells to irrigate their crops. A solar water pump would reduce the labor involved and increase the efficiency of the irrigation process.

Rent-to-Own is keen on testing out newer irrigation technologies such as the solar water pumps that are not widely available on the Zambian market. With the rising costs of fuel and labor in the region, solar technologies are becoming a more viable option. Rent-to-Own will deliver the solar water pump directly to Maureen's farm and will provide her with training on how to properly use and maintain the pump.
