Erica's story

I am a single mother of a brand new middle schooler. I was an educator in Charlotte NC for over 10 years and was honored as Teacher of the Year while I completed my Masters in School Administration in Spring of 2009. It was a great season in education for me.
I relocated to Atlanta for more opportunities and unfortunately Becomig a whistle blower created a hostile work environment that impacted my health and led to me resigning from the classroom full time. Funds got depleted and I had to move me and my son back in with my parents in Charleston, SC. We went through a very rough period of losing just about everything we owned and I experienced a difficult time finding employment as I teach a subject that rarely has any openings. The class formerly known as Home Ec.
I did odd end jobs like scrubbing toilets, waitressing, and selling lunches. My food always kept clothes on our backs. I love to cook and have been cooking since I was 7. In 2014, I launched a Kickstarter and was funded in 3 days to start my own food business. It helped me build the foundation but I didn't ask for enough to sustain it out of fear of not meeting the goal and not receiving any funding at all.
I have made changes after reevaluating my commitment to my life goals kicking fear in the face. I will be honest in the fact I dared myself to live more boldly after 9 community members lost their lives tragically in the church shooting in Charleston. In 2016, I returned to the city of Atlanta, got a part time job to pay for my kitchen space and continue to build a business that serves and equips the community.
