Joy's story

As a child, I stayed in my room and read book after book. My parents were busy and unhappy and I just wanted to be anywhere but there. I think that being cooped up in my room all the time probably wasn't the best thing for me, but it wasn't the worst either, as I had plenty of time to daydream and make plans for the life I would have later.

Now I am 34 years old, dont spend nearly enough time in my bedroom anymore and I have 3 daughters of my own who I strive to mold into strong, compassionate and confident people.

I live in Louisville, KY, not far from the little town I grew up in, but first I lived a little in a lot of other places. I grew a love for food and culinary arts living in Boston and New York. Louisville was somewhere that I visited briefly with a friend about 12 years ago. I thought it had a lot of character and a lot of good food. Years later, I needed to find somewhere where I could support a family, but that still had that indie and foodie vibe. I remembered Louisville, and here we are.

I want to eventually open multiple locations and expand into something that is a community pillar, where the majority of the proceeds to go towards the education and health and empowerment of girls. So much of my life has been about reminding myself to be the person I needed back then and did not have, I want our programs to teach not only cooking, but self esteem and persistence.

This loan is special because:

It helps develop programs to empower young girls.
