A loan helped build a solar-powered coffee roasting plant in Cusco and help 40 local farmers increase their income by 70%.

Cafe Compadre's story

Around 150,000 families of small coffee farmers live in the town of Satipo in the Junin region of Peru’s eastern jungles. They’re involved in the production of green coffee beans, which is 12% of the value of the final product. As a result, coffee farmers live below the poverty line with no prospect for increased income.

Café Compadre provides coffee farmers with solar-powered technology and training to roast and improve the quality of their coffee beans. The enterprise then distributes it under the Café Compadre brand providing each farmer with a 70% higher payment for their product.

Your Kiva loan will help build a new roasting plant in Cusco and support its working capital needs to reach breakeven. This new plant will help Compadre improve livelihoods for more than 200 farm family members and save 10.4 tons of CO2 by 2020.

This loan is special because:

It supports businesses that are too big for microfinance but too small for banks.
