Emélido O. Espinoza is 70 years old and lives with his wife and nephew in a small rural community in the Alajuela province of Costa Rica called Las Delicias de Upala. They raise cattle for their meat and milk and plant basic crops such as rice, bean, and corn, among others.
Emélido has been raising cattle for many years. He sells his products to nearby communities and his customers are very satisfied with the quality of products he sells. If fact, the demand for his products outweighs the supply he is able to provide. Don Emélido is thankful to the for the opportunities the microfinance organization has given him. Little by little his family has been able to improve their quality of life. They have been able to play an integral part in the development of the community, which has gone through frequent periods of inclemency and unemployment.
Don Emélido would like to obtain a loan for ¢685,000 (six hundred eighty-five thousand colones) so that he can purchase three cows to increase his production. He knows that raising three extra cattle will require a lot of sacrifices and extra work. However, his goal is to be an outstanding small business owner and he is motivated to get ahead and improve his family's quality of life.
Don Emélido is a member of the Empresa de Crédito Comunal Datraban, one of 100 organizations which make up EDESA in Costa Rica. This will be his second loan and with the loan he hopes to continue to grow on a personal and economic level and to become more active in the credit organization in his community.
