Luis B's story

My mom used to work at a cafeteria. I developed interest in the food industry very young. This led me to discover that I had inherited her culinary skills and passion for cooking and indulging our clients’ palates. I have always also been driven by the desire to establish my own business so, being unable to find at college something else that truly satisfied me as much as cooking, I went on and started my own catering business 14 years ago. I worked primarily for medical propagandists and big companies that were constantly honoring their VIP clients and employees with catering buffets.

However, recently, Puerto Rico’s economy has been greatly challenged and companies are constantly shortening the budgets for this type of indulging and enjoyment activities. While I developed my new business plan with the help of professionals in the accounting and legal industries, I have been working providing chef services on site. However, the constant demands for making available the high quality, healthy and savory food that has always distinguished me led to the idea of this new business.

This business will not only support my household, but it will also be the main support for the service we offer to the homeless communities in our country. Currently, we gather three times a week to bring a warm home cooked meal prepared by me, to the homeless communities. This consumes at least $600.00 of our monthly income. The only contributions we receive are from family and friends who get to know about our initiative. I am very proud to have supplied their need for food, human contact and socialization for the past 14 years and even more proud of all those we have helped restore their lives and families. This has been one of my greatest satisfactions in life.

This loan is special because:

It supports an enthusiastic entrepreneur who wants to provide high quality, healthy food to people in his community.
