Skyler's story

I grew up in North Lawndale, Chicago, Illinois. In the early 90's there were black-owned businesses that filled my neighborhood. In the late 00's I graduated high school in North Lawndale. Now in 2017, I am conducting business and serving millennial families, residents, and professionals in North Lawndale.

North Lawndale is a food desert, there is limited access to healthy options to a community of resident and professionals. I fulfilled a request of a law school graduate who was teaching in the community to prepare weekly lunches for them and another co-worker. That activated the dream of owning a restaurant within the community to offset the countless amount of fast food establishments, but first, a catering company to fulfill the immediate small yet impactful needs of North Lawndale.

Recently during the 2016 holiday season, an artist tasted my grandmother's recipe for sweet potato pie, it reminded them of their grandmother's pie. The artist continually raved about the pie, then went on to tell me of this one time their grandmother made a special pie. A sweet potato pie with a shortbread crust. I recreated the pie, and the pendulum was set in motion. I canvassed the community giving samples, securing and completing orders for Thanksgiving. For Christmas, I exceed my Thanksgiving through social media promotion and online ordering only.

I currently reside in Englewood, a redeveloping Chicago community, and I travel to North Lawndale daily for various deliveries and community events.
