A loan helped a member to pay for improved seed and tractor rental which will allow these farmers to escape subsistence by farming a larger area with a higher yield.

Mortatay Group's story

The Mortatay Group are an all-female group of outstanding farmers located in Koidu, Eastern Sierra Leone. Koidu was one of the areas hardest-hit by the Ebola Crisis in Sierra Leone. While international coverage of the crisis and acute danger have faded, the stark economic damage done is still creating enormous challenges for survivors.

Mbalu(Squatting) along with Mortatay Group were hit especially hard by the Ebola Crisis and most remain trapped in a cycle of subsistence where they have no option but to take extremely high-interest loans for poor quality inputs during planting time. A low interest loan can make all the difference to these farmers.

In addition to any KIVA loan disbursed to Mbalu and Mortatay Group, Field Partner Mountain Lion Agriculture (mlbr.org) will also support these farmers with technical advice, equipment rental and market access. With this powerful mix of capital and support, each farmer’s annual net income should grow – sustainably – by at least 250%. Your loan to the Healthy Business Group will therefore enable an entire community to lift itself out of poverty, while growing a much needed staple food (rice) during a time of food insecurity in Sierra Leone.

In this group: Mbalu, Fanta, Fatmata, Fatmata, Musukura, Hawa, Reguiatu, Memuna, Hawa, Tenneh, Kumba
