A loan helped to pay for urea and seeds for her farming business.

Beatriz's story

Hard-working Beatriz is a 67-year-old widow who lives in Chimoio, Mozambique. She has five children from the ages of 42 to 21 that work and study. She has a 100-acre field and 12 years of experience in agriculture.

Beatriz's biggest challenge with the agriculture business is the lack of good quality products and knowledge of farming techniques. She loves working at her field because she loves the earth and because it was the first job she had living with her parents. Beatriz dreams of teaching agricultural techniques and expanding production areas. She believes that agriculture is the basis of development in a family and a country.

With this loan, Beatriz will buy and use inputs, pesticides, and fertilizers. She will buy corn seeds to plant and harvest in six months. After collecting and selling, she will use part of the revenue to repay the loan.

Beatriz decided to get involved with agriculture when there came a year filled with hunger and her parents did not have enough money to feed the family. They had to live off money people gave them in the streets.

Beatriz will provide a down payment upon receiving the loan. The loan will also be partially matched by an in-kind credit of agricultural input supplies and equipment by a local private company, Luteari. The partnership between small entrepreneurs like Beatriz and private businesses represents an important link in the community and will have a positive impact for her and local farmers who will gain access to supplies and services.

This loan is special because:

It allows farmers access to new markets and agricultural resources.
